Aurum Heights
Introduction to Aurum Heights

Aurum Heights — known to its residents as Seraph's Retreat — is the highest-status island in The Heavens. Elegant estates with stunning gardens and majestic architecture stand at measured intervals along wide, tree-lined promenades. The island hosts the city's aristocracy, its wealthiest merchants, its most influential politicians, and those who have accumulated enough wealth to buy their way into their company. A sense of exclusivity permeates every cobblestone: visitors are noted, strangers are questioned, and those without business or invitation rarely find the experience comfortable.
The island is immaculately maintained. The streets are swept twice daily. The hedges are trimmed to precise geometric shapes. The Celestial Gardens bloom year-round through enchantment. Every building on the island is constructed to impress, and most succeed. Heaven's Reach bridge — the only public connection to Meridian Precinct — has a checkpoint manned at all hours. The checkpoint is polite. It is also firm.
Beneath the manicured surface, Aurum Heights is a place of extraordinary political density. The ten noble estates house six members of the Council of Peaks, the commander of the Skyguard, the city's most powerful banker, its most celebrated playwright, and its most influential chef. Every dinner party is a negotiation. Every social visit has an agenda. The Sanctuary of the Celestial Balance at the island's peak functions as both the city's primary temple and its most effective venue for off-the-record political conversation.
The Ivory Hand — the city's most patient and most feared blackmail operation — is believed to operate from within this island. Whether as operators, targets, or both, the noble families of Aurum Heights are the Hand's natural ecosystem.
Seraph's Retreat: The Noble Estates
The ten estates of Seraph's Retreat are the most prestigious private addresses in The Heavens. Ownership of an estate here is not inherited so much as it is maintained — through wealth, political relevance, and the continuous effort of being the kind of person others on the island wish to keep close. Estates have changed hands more than once when their owners became inconvenient.
-
Del Fuego Estate — Alejandro Del Fuego (Human, politician)
A veteran of the Council of Peaks for twenty years. His estate is known for its library of political correspondence and its impeccably stocked cellar. He knows where most of the bodies are buried. He is also believed to be partially responsible for the burying. -
Valeria Vineyards — Valeria Ortega (Elf, vintner)
The only estate with working agricultural land — enchanted terraced gardens producing the finest wine in Antaea. Valeria's relationship with Estevão Almeida of The Pouring Chalice is purely professional, publicly. The Nectar Archive carries her reserve stock exclusively. -
Castillo Manor — Ignacio Castillo (Dwarf, precious metals merchant)
A dwarven-built fortress of a house with understated elegance and walls thick enough to survive siege. El Rincón de Castillo on Seraph's Square is his commercial front. His home vault is believed to be larger than the shop. -
Flores Gardens — Carmen Flores (Smaling, botanist)
More garden than estate: Carmen's property is a labyrinth of rare, exotic, and several technically illegal plant specimens. She supplies Aromas of Antaea with ingredients. Her greenhouse doors are never fully open to visitors. Her greenhouse logs are kept with particular care. -
San Martín Citadel — Rodrigo San Martín (Human, General of the Skyguard)
Fortified and functional, built like its owner. San Martín chose the highest defensible point on the island for his residence. He holds weekly private meetings here with his senior officers that are not recorded in the Skyguard's official logs. -
Rosales Retreat — Adriana Rosales (Elf, artist)
The most beautiful property on the island and the least political — or so it appears. Adriana's surreal landscape portraits have a disturbing frequency of depicting locations in The Heavens that later become significant. Art critics call them prescient. The Skyguard has quietly purchased three. -
Mendoza Mansion — Diego Mendoza (Gnome, inventor)
Half the building is workshop. The rest is showroom for Diego's more presentable inventions; the less presentable ones are in the workshop. He is the reason the Whisk & Blink Magical Carriages exist. He is also the reason they occasionally phase through solid objects unintentionally. -
Luna Lodging — Leticia Luna (Dwarf, banker)
Understated exterior, extraordinary interior. Leticia understands that displays of wealth are for people who haven't secured enough of it yet. Her estate is the most frequently visited by Council members seeking private counsel. Her advice costs nothing. Owing her costs considerably more. -
Rivera Residency — Bernardo Rivera (Human, playwright)
The loudest estate on the island, which the neighbors tolerate because Bernardo's private performances for the noble families are extraordinary. His latest play — not yet publicly staged — is said to be about a city ruled by an aging lord and a council that plots against him. He has declined to clarify how much is fiction. -
Guerrero Grounds — Maria Guerrero (Smaling, chef and culinary school director)
The estate with the best kitchen on the island, which is saying something given the competition. Maria's culinary school has trained more private chefs for Aurum Heights estates than any other institution. She knows what everyone eats, which means she knows considerably more about them than they realize.
Buildings
Sanctuary of the Celestial Balance
Cleric: Lady Ester Rosas, Cleric of Pollaran
Lady Ester is an imposing figure — tall, regal bearing, jet-black hair in a tight braid, piercing green eyes. Despite her association with the god of war, she is calm and balanced in manner, respected among the island's elite for wise counsel and decisive leadership.
Constructed atop the highest peak of Seraph's Retreat, the Sanctuary is dedicated to the dual worship of Pollaran (god of war) and Zopha (goddess of knowledge). The grand entrance archway is carved white marble depicting Pollaran's battle scenes; the ceiling fresco shows Zopha surrounded by symbols of knowledge. On one side: an impressive statue of Pollaran, spear raised. On the other: an elegant shrine to Zopha, filled with ancient scrolls and books. At the center of the grand hall hangs the Celestial Balance — a massive bronze scale representing the balance between war and wisdom.
The Sanctuary provides religious guidance, spiritual counsel, and theological education to the noble families. Lady Ester offers blessings and protective spells; an exclusive library of sacred texts and philosophical works is available to island residents. Despite being a house of worship, the Sanctuary is also the most used venue for off-the-record political conversation on the island — the clergy's neutrality and the space's sanctity make it the one location where the noble families negotiate without fear.
Celestial Gardens
Adjacent to the Sanctuary on the island's highest plateau. An immaculately landscaped park centered on the Angel of Antaea — a 20-foot-tall marble statue of a winged celestial being, arms stretched upward, face carrying serene determination. The craftsmanship of the wing feathers is so precise that no mortal sculptor has been able to explain how they were made.
Five concentric circles of magical flora surround the Angel, moving inward from outer wall to statue: Whispering Willows (Salix Antaeus — delicate branches that rustle in still air), Glowing Gemleaf (Luminis Gemmifolia — leaves shimmering with iridescent color), Velvet Veil (Tactuoso Velo — leaves of inexplicable softness), Starlight Spirea (Spiraea Stellaris — tiny star-shaped flowers that glow faintly at dusk), and at the innermost ring, Heaven's Breath (Respiro Celestia — pale blue flowers releasing a scent said to calm the senses and uplift the spirit). Multiple visitors have reported that standing at the foot of the statue for more than a minute produces an inexplicable sense of being observed.
Seraph's Square
Located in the heart of Seraph's Retreat, Seraph's Square is the hub of elite commerce — luxury goods and high-quality necessities for the noble families and their households. Clean cobblestone pathways, flowering hedges, a grand fountain with a celestial statue at its center. Four permanent buildings of ornate architecture stand at each corner; well-maintained open-air stalls handle daily needs.
Building 1 — Del Sol Emporium: High-end grocer owned by a couple from the Del Fuego estate. Fresh, organic produce from the finest farms in The Heavens and the Heaven's Isles supply settlements.
Building 2 — Ortega Wine and Spirits: Valeria Ortega's commercial outpost. Extensive fine wine and aged spirit collection; private corner for Valeria Vineyards reserve. Private tasting room by appointment.
Building 3 — El Rincón de Castillo: Ignacio Castillo's boutique for precious metals and gemstones. Custom jewelry from stones in Castillo's merchant network. The back room requires a different introduction than the front.
Building 4 — Flores' Flora: Carmen Flores' garden center — exotic plants, specialist seeds, botanical advice. The selection on public display is roughly a third of what Carmen actually cultivates. The rest is available by personal arrangement.
Open Market Stalls: Fresh seafood, imported fabrics, artisan crafts, gourmet cheeses, cured meats, and pastries. Despite the activity, the Square maintains a refined quiet.
The Gilded Griffin
Owner: Lady Lisette DuCrest ("Liz-ett Doo-Crest"), a High Elf woman of impeccable presentation, icy-blue eyes, silver hair, and a sophisticated eye for the details that distinguish excellent hospitality from merely expensive hospitality.
The Gilded Griffin is the only full luxury hotel on Aurum Heights — marble facade, mahogany doors, a foyer of gold leaf accents, crystal chandeliers, and velvet drapes. Plush suites with en-suite baths and comfort enchantments; fine dining prepared by a renowned house chef; an enchanted rooftop garden maintained at perfect climate regardless of external weather. Invisible personal servants are available to guests on demand; soundproofing spells provide genuine privacy.
Concierge services include private city tours, reserved event seating, and personal shopping. The Gilded Griffin is where visiting dignitaries and off-world travelers of means stay; it is also where the city's elite host guests they wish to impress rather than intimidate.
Staff: Head Butler Edwin Crestfall (human, high society etiquette expert), Head Chef Marisol Flametongue (sand elf, culinary magic sought after by the upper echelons), Head of Housekeeping Yalira Softwhisper (wood elf, meticulous and organisationally precise).
Rates: highest in The Heavens outside a private estate.
The Majestic Loom
Owner: Lady Catalina "Ka-ta-lee-na" de la Rosa, a woman of Antaean descent in her late forties. Raven hair in a sophisticated bun, warm eyes, and a keen eye for cut and material that has made her the clothier of choice for Aurum Heights' elite.
The Majestic Loom is a high-end clothier on the island's fashionable avenue — polished mahogany and gold-leaf facade, interior displaying fine clothes and accessories with the care of a gallery. Bolts of fabric from across Dort line the shelves. Custom tailoring is the core service: everything from everyday formal wear to extravagant gowns and suits, fitted to the individual. The lacework is a noted specialty.
The private fitting room — gilded mirrors, plush seating — is where Catalina meets clients directly for consultation. She brings the expertise; clients bring the brief. Staff include Elisa (young seamstress, extraordinary embroidery) and Miguel (seasoned tailor, unmatched in suit and gown construction).
For GMs: The Majestic Loom can produce formal attire that provides genuine social credibility in Aurum Heights settings — the right clothing matters here. Lead time on bespoke pieces is typically one to two weeks.
Aromas of Antaea
Owner: Don Alberto Delgado, a refined gentleman of Antaean origin with silvery hair, tanned skin, and a genuine gift for reading people through scent. He is a storyteller; each of his perfumes tells a story, and he'll tell it to anyone who asks.
Aromas of Antaea is a perfumery of unusual character — antique wooden entrance, glass bottles and jars of exotic ingredients, old distillation apparatus giving the interior a workshop quality that contrasts deliberately with the luxury of the products. The specialty is personalized fragrances: Alberto creates scents based on individual preferences, memories, and emotions. The Scent Memory Chamber — a small, softly lit room where clients are immersed in various scents to surface hidden memories — provides the emotional raw material for each bespoke commission.
Workshops in perfume appreciation and blending are offered for clients who want to understand the craft.
Standard Fragrances:
- Elysian Sunrise (25 gp): Fresh, citrus and floral. Inspired by dawn in a blooming garden.
- Mystique of Irna (30 gp): Deep, woody, hint of spice. An ancient forest's atmosphere.
- Shoing's Embrace (30 gp): Warm spices, exotic flowers, sweet vanilla. Comforting and oriental.
- Whispering Sand of Jazirah (35 gp): Dry woody notes and soft floral undertones — the contrast of desert and oasis.
Magical Perfume:
- Veil of Vespera (100 gp): Night-blooming flowers, moonlight, faint starlight. When applied, grants the wearer an enhanced charismatic aura (subtle glow, increased presence) for one hour. Usable once per day.
The Pouring Chalice
Owner: Estevão "Es-teh-vown" Almeida, a jovial, portly man from Irna with wine-bright eyes and an easy charisma. He will talk about wine for as long as anyone is willing to listen, and the conversation is invariably worth having.
The Pouring Chalice occupies a building on Vine Vessel Street styled after a traditional Irna vineyard — climbing vines on stonework, barrels near the entrance. Inside, the space is dim (optimal wine storage), shelves of meticulously labeled bottles from affordable table wines to rare and expensive vintages from across Dort. A circular tasting area in the center hosts regular sessions; Estevão leads them himself.
Staff: Vasco Lobo (human from Irna, inventory management and sourcing), Amira Abadi (woman from Jazirah, refined palate, expert pairing advice during tastings).
For GMs: The Pouring Chalice carries Valeria Vineyards' reserve label exclusively, which creates a useful social connection between Estevão and Valeria Ortega. The tasting sessions attract Aurum Heights residents looking to discuss wine and, often, considerably more.
The Sanguine Peacock
Owner: Isolde "Eye-zold" Vanora, a High Elf from Irna with silvery-blond hair, sea-green eyes, and a regal bearing built from decades in a business where reading people is survival. She is a former courtesan who now manages rather than works; her business acumen and extensive network are what make the establishment's reputation.
The Sanguine Peacock is discreetly situated on the island, its exterior understated — ivy on stonework, warm light in high windows. Inside: opulent furnishings, tasteful decor, soft lighting, private suites with every comfort. Courtesans are diverse in background and highly trained — skilled in music, dance, and poetry and able to converse intelligently on a wide range of subjects. Clients are buying intellect and conversation as much as companionship.
Membership is available to loyal and respectful patrons: priority bookings, personal introductions, and invitations to private events hosted at the Peacock — lavish gatherings featuring performances, fine dining, and political and social networking opportunities.
Persistent rumors speak of secret rooms and hidden passages accessible only to trusted clients. Whether this refers to private meeting spaces for off-record negotiations or something more depends on who is talking.
The Nectar Archive
Owner: Rava Solheart, a statuesque Elf from Irna with sun-kissed skin, golden hair, and emerald eyes that carry centuries of wine knowledge. Rava is charming and precise about her craft; she will spend as long discussing a vintage as the client is interested.
The Nectar Archive is both a working vineyard on the outskirts of The Heavens and a city shop — the shop itself is dark wood and glass, wines archived on floor-to-ceiling shelves, a large tasting bar, and small tables for clients who want to sit with a bottle. Rava cultivates multiple grape varieties producing the full range from robust reds to delicate whites, rosés, and sparkling wines. Every bottle comes with its story: the year's conditions, the care taken, what makes this vintage different from the last.
Staff: a Smaling sommelier (keen palate), a team of Dwarves managing the vineyard and winemaking process.
Services: personalized wine-tasting tours, wine pairing consultations, wine subscription service (selection delivered monthly).
