The Source

The Source

The Source is the origin of all life-energy in the cosmos — the absolute counterpoint to The Drain. Where the Drain consumes, the Source generates. Where the Drain pulls everything toward its ancient center, the Source pushes everything outward from its own. Every living thing that exists draws from it at a fundamental level; every healing spell, every act of creation, every new life is a temporary expression of energy that ultimately flows from here.

This does not make the Source safe. Too much vitality is as lethal as too little.

Nature

The Source is light and heat and energy in quantities that eliminate any conventional landscape. There is no terrain, no ground, no horizon — only radiance in every direction, so dense and active that it becomes physical in the way a river is physical. Travelers do not move through empty brightness. They move through something that pushes back, that has current and pressure and the constant, insistent quality of more than anything biological was designed to contain.

The margins — the outermost regions of the Source, where the energy is thinnest — are survivable with serious protection. The intensity increases toward the center in a consistent gradient. Deep in the Source, the energy is not merely bright; it is the generating pressure itself, pushing outward in all directions, and what sits at that center is the reason everything in the cosmos that lives has ever lived.

What the Source Does to You

An unprotected mortal entering the Source is not healed. The plane does not perceive the difference between providing energy to a depleted system and flooding a system that cannot accommodate more. The result is cellular overload: the body's processes accelerate past their limits. Tissue grows faster than structure can support it. Bone extends. Healing that would be gradual becomes immediate and then continues past the point of repair into the point of rupture.

The early moments are not painful. The body is receiving more vitality than it has ever had, and for a brief period, this feels like what the healthiest possible version of life might feel like. Then the growth outpaces coherence. The process is not slow after that point.

Protection against the Source is the same operational requirement as protection against the Drain: sustained magical shielding that regulates the intake of energy, keeping the plane's output from simply overwhelming the traveler's biology. The specific nature of the shielding is different — calibrated to limit intake rather than generate against loss — but the maintenance demand is comparable. Let the protection slip, and the Source begins to do what it does to everything.

The Center of the Source

Something at the center of the Source is the reason the Source generates.

This parallels what the Drain's practitioners have inferred about their plane — an ancient presence that is the reason the entropy streams flow inward. The Source has a counterpart: something at the generating heart from which the outward pressure originates. Unlike the Drain's center, which pulls without apparent expression, the Source's center pushes. The energy that flows outward through every healing spell cast anywhere in the cosmos, through every new life that begins, through the generative force underlying all creation — it flows from that point.

What it is has no more of a settled name in mortal knowledge than its counterpart in the Drain. The pilgrims and practitioners who have entered the Source in acts of devotion have not come close to the center — the intensity at those depths is not survivable on any documented attempt. What is understood comes from inference: the outward pressure is not ambient, it is directed; it originates from a specific direction within the plane; and what the Source's native inhabitants do when they are closest to that direction suggests they are responding to something rather than simply existing near it.

Whether the generating presence and the drawing presence in the Drain are aware of each other — whether they are two aspects of the same thing or entirely separate — is a question that theology and cosmological scholarship have not answered.

Sacred Access

Healing and creation magic draw from the Source the way necromantic practice draws from the Drain: remotely, through spellcraft, without requiring the practitioner to be present on the plane. For practical work, no one needs to come here. The energy is accessible from anywhere.

Practitioners who do come here do not come to work. They come because entry into the Source is considered a significant spiritual event — a test, an act of devotion, an attempt at direct contact with the generative force underlying existence. Different traditions approach this differently: some treat it as a pilgrimage in which surviving the crossing is itself the point; some treat proximity to the center as a goal, with the distance you can reach before your protections fail as a measure of something; some come seeking direct perception of the generating presence and return claiming they achieved it, though what they describe is inconsistent enough to invite skepticism.

What practitioners who have entered agree on: the experience of the Source is not like drawing from it remotely. The difference between channeling healing magic from a distance and standing in the plane that produces it is not a matter of degree. It is a different order of experience entirely. Most who survive it do not attempt it twice.

Inhabitants

The Source's permanent inhabitants are expressions of its energy given apparent form. They behave as if intelligent — they navigate, they orient toward things, they respond differently to different stimuli — but whether they have interior experience in any meaningful sense is not clear. They are concentrations of the Source's generative force that have achieved enough density and consistency to maintain coherent shape over time. They are not created by any god, not servants of any will, not beings with histories or goals in the way mortals have goals. They are what the Source looks like when it forms temporary focal points.

Their relationship to mortal visitors is not hostile. It is also not welcoming. They exist at an intensity that mortal biology is not calibrated for, and their proximity accelerates the flood effect on unprotected travelers the same way the entropy-shaped presences of the Drain accelerate the drain. This is not aggression. It is simply what they are, near something that is not equipped to be near them.

Protected travelers report that the inhabitants appear aware of mortal presence and oriented toward it. Whether this constitutes curiosity, something more like a gravitational response to an anomaly in the plane's energy field, or something else entirely is not determinable from outside.

Role in the Cosmos

The Source sustains the cosmic cycle by providing the vital counterforce to the Drain. Without it, entropy would run unchecked — the Drain's consumption would not be balanced by generation, and the cosmos would trend toward dissolution without replacement. Without the Drain, the Source's generation would accumulate without end. Together, in a tension that is not gentle equilibrium but active opposition, they define the shape of existence.

The Source does not govern life. It enables it. The gods of creation, healing, and new beginnings draw their domains from proximity to what the Source represents, but the Source predates those domains and does not require divine intermediary to function.

Mortals in the Source

Arrival

Physical entry requires knowing where the boundary is and how to cross it — the same arcane knowledge that enables crossing into any Mystical Realm — and it requires that protective shielding be established before entry, not after. The flood effect begins immediately. There is no acclimation period, no initial grace. Pilgrims who come in acts of devotion typically spend considerable time in preparation before crossing. Practitioners who come for less ceremonial reasons do the same. Anyone who arrives without preparation does not remain coherent long enough for arrival to matter.

Environmental Effects

The immediate environment is overwhelmingly sensory — light that is perceived as pressure rather than simply illumination, warmth that is physical rather than ambient. Properly shielded travelers can function. Incompletely shielded travelers begin to experience the early stages of the flood effect: heightened sensation, accelerated healing of existing wounds, a feeling of excessive vitality that is the first sign of intake exceeding capacity. The shift from that early stage to cellular overload is faster than it feels like it should be.

The plane also affects magical working in the opposite direction from the Drain. Healing spells are amplified here, sometimes uncontrollably. Creation magic behaves unpredictably in proximity to its own origin. Practitioners who come here for sacred reasons generally do not attempt active spellwork during their crossing — not because it is forbidden, but because the results are difficult to govern.

Movement is by intention, as in all Mystical Realms. In the Source, the outward pressure of the generative force creates a consistent orientation: moving toward the center requires moving against the pressure; moving outward toward the margins is easier. Pilgrims seeking to test how close they can come to the center are working against the plane's natural direction. Travelers who simply need to cross to the margins for exit move with it.

The plane's inhabitants are present throughout and are not avoidable. Shielding prevents the flood acceleration their proximity causes. The shielding must be maintained continuously.

Departure

Exit follows the outward pressure back to the margins and the boundary beyond. A properly shielded traveler moving toward the margins is moving in the same direction the Source naturally pushes, which makes departure easier than entry in a physical sense. The difficulty is the same as in the Drain: the longer the stay, the more the shielding has been tested, and a traveler whose protections have partially degraded may find the exit more difficult to complete than the entry was.

Pilgrims who come seeking deep access — attempting to push toward the center against the outward pressure — face the opposite departure problem: they have spent their shielding on the inward crossing and must exit with less protection than they entered with.

Locations

The Outer Radiance

The Outer Radiance is the margin of the Source — the region closest to the plane's boundary with adjacent realms, where the energy is least concentrated. It is the only part of the Source where mortal survival is practically achievable with preparation, and it is where the established pilgrimage practices begin and often end. The intensity here is still far beyond anything in the physical planes, but it is within the range that well-constructed protective shielding can address.

Most mortal knowledge of the Source comes from the Outer Radiance. The accounts of what lies deeper are secondhand, inferred, or theological.

The Generative Current

The Generative Current is the outward flow of the Source's energy — not a river in a physical sense but a directional movement of the plane's power that can be perceived and used for navigation. Following the Current toward the margins is the safest path to exit. Moving against it toward the center is the direction all pilgrims who seek deeper access must go.

The Current's intensity increases closer to the center. Where it originates — the generating presence at the Source's heart — it is not a flow so much as an eruption, and no mortal preparation has been sufficient to approach that depth and return.

The Witness Threshold

The Witness Threshold is a term used among practitioners who study or practice sacred entry to describe the depth at which the generating presence becomes perceptible — where the outward pressure changes from ambient energy to something that has a quality of directed intention behind it. It is not a fixed location; it is reached at different depths by different travelers, and some argue it cannot be reached at all, that what practitioners report feeling at that depth is the projection of devotion onto a mindless force.

Those who believe they have reached the Witness Threshold describe it uniformly as the most significant experience of their lives. They describe it inconsistently in almost every other respect. The common elements: a shift in the quality of the pressure from impersonal to oriented; a sense that what generates the Source's energy is aware that something mortal is present; and the moment when their protections, tested by the depth, required them to turn back before they could learn anything further.
