Dragonborne Flame Runner

Drakin Flame Runner

"The sparks on the road told us the cavalry was coming before we heard them. Half a mile of embers."
— Shoing military account, Battle of the Ash Pass

IDENTITY

  • Common Name: Drakin Flame Runner
  • Plural Form: Flame Runners
  • Classification: Beast
  • Alternate Names: Fireblood, Ashfoot, Volcanosteed

DESCRIPTION

The Drakin Flame Runner is a large, powerfully built horse originating from Chon Buri in [Shoing](Shoing/Welcome to Shoing), bred over generations in the shadow of volcanic terrain. Its most striking feature is its coat: deep ember reds to molten oranges with a smoldering, shifting pattern that flickers in direct light like a slow burn. Its skin is denser than that of standard horses, with a subtly scaled texture along the neck and shoulders that gives it the faint visual echo of a dragon — which is, of course, the deliberate intention of its Chon Buri breeders. Its hooves leave a trail of harmless sparks on hard stone, a byproduct of the volcanic mineral deposits in its diet and blood.

  • Size: Large — tall and muscular, imposing even at rest
  • Distinguishing Traits: Ember-toned coat with shifting flame patterns, scaled texture on neck and shoulders, spark trail on hard surfaces, radiates warmth noticeably

HABITAT & RANGE

Bred in and around Chon Buri in [Shoing](Shoing/Welcome to Shoing), where the volcanic landscape has been the breed's shaping environment for generations. Flame Runners thrive in hot, rocky, and volcanic terrain and are found primarily in Shoing's highlands and mountainous interior. Export specimens exist but are rare and expensive; they do not perform well in cold climates and become lethargic below a certain temperature threshold.

BEHAVIOR

Spirited, fierce, and fiercely loyal to those who have earned its respect. The Flame Runner is not a horse for casual riders — it reads weakness and will test its handler until a genuine bond is established. Once bonded, the connection runs deep; riders describe it as almost telepathic in responsiveness. The breed has an innate comfort with fire and heat — open flames don't disturb it, and it navigates volcanic terrain with the ease of an animal that grew up in it.

Note: Non-scale-based riders suffer disadvantage on physical checks while the mount is moving at speed, due to the warmth and the unpredictable micro-surges of the flame runner's gait.

THREAT & DEFENSE

Capable of genuine combat contribution — its hoof strike deals fire damage in addition to bludgeoning, and its Fiery Breath is a meaningful area attack. Primarily serves as a cavalry and prestige mount, but in Shoing's military tradition, the Flame Runner is expected to participate in battle rather than merely carry its rider to it.

Price: 500 gp — rarely available outside Chon Buri

WORLD CONTEXT

In [Shoing](Shoing/Welcome to Shoing), the Drakin Flame Runner is a mark of elite status — seen at the head of military parades, in the stables of war captains, and leading ceremonial processions. The legend of the breed's origin, a mythical steed born from Mount Kyrath's heart and tamed by an ancient Chon Buri hero, is taught to children as part of the city's founding mythology.
