Irnian Coursers

Irnian Courser

"Born faster than thunder. Bred to stay that way."
— Aysgarth horseman's saying

IDENTITY

  • Common Name: Irnian Courser
  • Plural Form: Irnian Coursers
  • Classification: Beast
  • Alternate Names: Plains Runner, Aysgarth Blood, the Wide-Sky Horse

DESCRIPTION

The Irnian Courser is a tall, lean horse with long legs, a muscular frame built for sustained speed, and a commanding presence that comes from being bred in open country where visibility and presence matter. Its coat runs in earthy plains tones — duns, greys, and roans that reflect the rolling grassland color palette — with a long, flowing mane and tail. It is a horse of the open horizon, visibly uncomfortable in enclosed terrain, but on flat ground or sweeping plains it is one of the fastest sustained-speed mounts in Dort.

  • Size: Large — tall and long-legged, bigger than most common riding horses
  • Distinguishing Traits: Exceptional reach in its stride, long flowing mane, always alert and slightly restless when stabled, visibly faster over distance than it appears

HABITAT & RANGE

Bred in Aysgarth and the surrounding plains settlements of [Irna](Irna/Welcome to Irna), where the plains tribes developed the breed over generations for hunting and warfare. Found throughout Irna's open plains regions and increasingly traded to other continents where speed over distance is prized. The Courser does not adapt well to mountain or jungle terrain — it is built for open ground and becomes anxious and less effective when confined.

BEHAVIOR

Spirited and responsive, with an even temperament that makes it reliable in the field despite its energy. The Courser is bred for partnership — the plains tribes' horsemanship tradition emphasizes mutual understanding rather than domination, and Coursers reflect that heritage in their sensitivity to rider communication. They require regular, meaningful exercise; a Courser kept in a stable too long becomes difficult to manage.

THREAT & DEFENSE

Speed is its defense. On open terrain the Courser can sustain a pace that most threats cannot match over distance, making flight its most reliable option. Its hoof kick is solid in a pinch, and it can Dash as a bonus action (with limits) for bursts of additional speed.

WORLD CONTEXT

In [Irna](Irna/Welcome to Irna), the Irnian Courser is central to the cultural identity of the plains tribes. These horses appear in ritual ceremonies, are central to Aysgarth's seasonal festivals, and serve as markers of status and heritage. Owning a Courser signals connection to the plains tradition — to ride one is to participate in a living legacy. They are prized by scouts, light cavalry, and messengers across the continent.
