Ambush Cactus

Ambush Cactus
"Don't touch the big ones. The big ones touch back."
— Jazirah trail guide proverb
IDENTITY
- Common Name: Ambush Cactus
- Classification: Plant
- Alternate Names: Grasper Cactus, Tendril Cactus (Mosulad merchants)
DESCRIPTION
At a glance, the Ambush Cactus is indistinguishable from the barrel and column cacti that dot the deserts of [Jazirah](Jazirah/Welcome to Jazirah). It stands roughly 5 to 6 feet tall, thick-ribbed and spine-covered, with a dull green-grey skin that blends seamlessly into the surrounding scrub. The difference only becomes apparent when something living passes within reach — at which point a ring of fibrous, barbed tendrils erupts from the base and lower body, lashing outward with surprising speed. The plant drains life force from whatever it grasps, visibly plumping and greening as its prey weakens.
- Size: Medium — roughly the height of a tall human, stout and barrel-shaped
- Distinguishing Traits: Barbed tendril ring at base, slightly brighter green coloring than native cacti after recent feeding, faint sweet scent that attracts insects and small animals
HABITAT & RANGE
Found throughout the deep desert and canyon country of [Jazirah](Jazirah/Welcome to Jazirah), particularly along well-traveled routes and watering holes where prey passes predictably. They favor sandy flats with scattered rock cover where they blend into natural cactus groves. Rarely found near oases — the abundance of life there tends to expose them quickly.
BEHAVIOR
Entirely mindless, the Ambush Cactus is a sit-and-wait predator. It creeps slowly between feeding sites during cool nights but otherwise remains motionless for weeks. Its blindsight detects vibration and body heat within 60 feet, triggering the tendril strike. After grasping prey, it draws life energy through the tendrils to sustain itself, capable of surviving months between successful hunts.
THREAT & DEFENSE
Moderately dangerous to unprepared travelers — its threat comes almost entirely from ambush and grapple. A creature caught in its tendrils is drained of vitality while held. It can also spray a wide cone of barbed thorns when pressed. Highly resistant to physical blows but vulnerable to fire. Locals advise burning suspicious cacti rather than testing them up close.
WORLD CONTEXT
Jazirah guides learn to read the signs: the too-uniform spacing, the absence of insect activity, the faint sweet smell. In Mosulad's bazaars, dried Ambush Cactus tendrils are sold as alchemical components, prized in certain poisons and restorative tonics for their life-drain properties.
