Yara

Yara
Between Tafunzi and Isbi, there are three routes. Each one has killed people. Yara has taken all three of them, repeatedly, and brought her caravan through alive more often than the terrain and the bandits would suggest is statistically likely. She attributes this to Martus. Her caravan members attribute it to Yara.
Yara is an elf with rich brown skin, and she has led caravans across the stretch between Tafunzi and Isbi for long enough that the route is hers in the way that a territory belongs to someone who knows every corner of it — not by ownership, but by accumulated knowledge. Her attire is desert garb: functional, breathable for long journeys, protection from the sun without restriction of movement. Her skin shows the life she has lived under it. Her eyes carry the wariness of someone who has seen most of what can go wrong and has developed a response for each.
She is pragmatic in the way that comes from having led people through situations where sentiment would have gotten them killed. She is also deeply devout — her faith in Martus is genuine and expressed practically: before each run, she rolls a die to choose the route, which she describes as letting Martus guide the decision. Her caravan members have learned that the roll is not superstition; it works, with a consistency that has stopped being explicable by luck and has become part of how she is understood.
She is fiercely loyal to her crew and will confront danger directly to protect them. She is unimpressed by people who dress up cowardice as caution, and respectful of people who acknowledge real risk without using it as an excuse to stop moving.
Routes
Yara maintains three primary routes between Tafunzi and Isbi, each with different risk profiles:
The Dune Path — Winds through expansive sand dunes. Good cover, difficult navigation, risk of disorientation.
The Canyon Trail — More direct, cuts through canyons. Potentially faster, higher ambush risk due to terrain.
The Oasis Route — Longer and more scenic, passes several oases with reliable water. The water attracts bandits looking to prey on tired travelers.
Which route Yara takes on any given run is determined by the roll. She has never explained the mechanism by which this consistently produces the right answer. She considers the question answered by Martus and not in need of further examination.
In Tafunzi, Yara is known as the reliable choice for trade passage. Many merchants specifically request her caravan. The ones who have traveled with her once tend to request her again. The ones who haven't been on a desert run before sometimes find her manner abrasive right up until the moment something goes wrong and she handles it, after which they do not find her manner abrasive.
